Boob Positivity: Looking after your boobs

The second instalment in our Boob Positivity campaign is all about looking after your boobs. It's really important to look after your boobs so they look and feel great every day, just like your body. Living a healthy lifestyle, checking your boobs regularly and wearing great fitting lingerie goes a long way to keeping your breasts in tip top shape.

Check your boobs regularly

The first thing to do is make sure you check your breasts on a regular basis for signs and symptoms of breast cancer. It isn't as scary as it sounds and you only need to do it once every 2 weeks or so. It's good to get to know your boobs and understand what feels natural and what doesn't. It will make it easier to spot unusual changes and check with your doctor.

With 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK, it is the most common form of cancer in the UK. Understanding the signs and attending your mammography helps provide forms of early detection.

Follow a simple guide on how to check your boobs.

Moisturise your boobs

When you moisturise your body, take some time to also moisturise your boobs. We sometimes forget our boobs when moisturising, but the skin around our breasts is thin and can be particularly sensitive, so it's good to prevent them from getting dry and sore. If you get rashes or redness around the chest area, make sure you get it checked by the doctor just in case, otherwise it could be your clothing fabric or a chemical in the moisturiser that is causing a reaction.

Healthy Lifestyle

Just like your body, your boobs require healthy nourishment and regular exercise to keep them happy. This will vary for everyone depending on your needs and body, but introducing more physical activities including sports, jogging, walking and classes will help protect your breasts, especially with a good fitting supportive sports bra. Eat plenty of essential fatty-acids, vegetables and anti-oxidant rich foods, whilst reducing processed sugars and carbohydrates.

Also, smoking is associated with increased risk of breast cancer and the chemicals in cigarettes can cause the break down of the body's elastin resulting in saggier breasts, so it's worth avoiding smoking if you can.

Don't wear bad fitting bras

There is nothing worse than wearing bad fitting bras, especially if they have underwires. This can cause back, shoulder and neck pains including bad posture and uncomfortable rubbing and chafing of the skin. This is the last thing your boobs or body need! If you are wearing bras, make sure they fit you well and the underwires are not digging into you or your boobs.

Don't forget the sunscreen

Your chest is a prime spot to catch the sun and I'm sure most of us have been sunburnt here too. Take extra care by applying sunscreen or moisturiser with SPF to your boobs whenever you are in the sun.
