The History of Fathers Day
It is believed that Fathers Day came about when a lady called Sonora Smart Dodd celebrated the first Fathers Day at a YMCA in Spokane, Washington on 19th June 1910. After hearing a Mothers Day sermon she wondered why fathers did not have their own day too and so, decided to hold a celebration honouring all fathers. Her father, a civil war veteran, William Jackson Smart was a single parent that raised 6 children all by himself.
In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers. He made the third Sunday of June Fathers Day. Six years later, President Richard Nixon made Fathers Day a permanent national holiday and signed it into law in 1972.
Fathers Day is celebrated in many different ways throughout the world. Fathers Day in Australia occurs on the first Sunday of September, whilst Germany celebrates Fathers Day (Vatertag or Mannertag) on the 40th day of Easter, Ascension Day. Traditionally, in Germany groups of men go into the woods with a wagon of beer, wines and meats to celebrate the occasion.
